What building one teaches
A mini ROV is a compact way into marine engineering and robotics. The Beginner ROV Building Course covers the build and the first test in 2 days.
Too heavy and it sinks, too light and it bobs on the surface. Tuning a hull to sit neutral in the water is the first real engineering problem an ROV hands you, and you solve it by testing, not by reading.
Every seam, cable and motor has to keep the water out. It is the part that decides whether a build survives its first dive, which is why it has its own place in the advanced course syllabus.
Motors and propellers move it, and the tether and control unit carry your commands down to it. Wiring them so the vehicle goes where you point it is where the robotics happens.
A pilot cannot look over the side. A live camera feed is how you see what the ROV sees, which changes how you drive it and what you can do with it.

Full size ROVs map the seabed, inspect underwater structures, support marine research and help navies clear mines. Every one of those jobs starts with the same small set of problems a mini ROV teaches.
